The History Museum was founded in 1919, and was originally called the Ethnographic-Anthropological Museum-Library. The museum opened its doors to visitors for the first time in 1921. The museum got its current name in 2003.
The Museum of History consists of more than 400,000 archaeological, ethnographic, numismatic, documentary and other samples, reflecting a complete picture of the culture and history of Armenia from prehistoric times (one million eight hundred thousand years ago) to the present day.
The archaeological collection includes objects from the Paleolithic, Neolithic - Eneolithic, Bronze and Early Iron Ages, Urartu, Early Armenian, Hellenistic, and Medieval periods excavated from the monuments of the region in different years.
In the ethnographic collection, one can see original samples of coppersmithing, weaponry, woodworking, fabric, as well as ethnographic-documentary photos. In the section of the numismatic collection, there are rich samples of coins, banknotes, stamps, medals.
Documents, photographs, negatives of architectural monuments and lithographic inscriptions, flags, seals, personal archives of public, political, military figures are included in the collection of documents.
The museum's permanent exhibition presents the history and culture of the Armenian people from the Stone Age to the present day. However, at the moment, permanent exhibition halls representing the period from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages are available. The exhibition is structured in chronological order and each gallery has a title corresponding to its content. They are:

  "The Kingdom of the Gods. Urartu/Bianili"
  "Strength and beauty. Ancient Armenia"
  "Christian Armenia"
